We’ve got a winner!
Back in December, Strictly Rhythm celebrated 20 years of label history by offering fans a chance to remix Armand Van Helden’s ‘Witch Doktor’, a classic slab of darkside house music. Now, the votes have been tallied and Strictly Rhythm have chosen their favorite from the 20 finalists.
Anton Zaslavski, ‘Witch Doktor (Zedd Remix)’
Kaiserslautern, Germany’s Anton Zaslavski, aka Zedd, came up with the winning entry. Zaslavski’s remix, which he produced in Cubase, swaps out the tribal congas of the original for a stomping electro-house groove, complete with a brand-new melody that’ll have your fillings buzzing. Between the sirens and the ominous chant, however, there’s no doubting the source.
Ironically, ‘Witch Doktor’ was new to him, which might explain the freshness of his version. “I must admit that I didn’t know the song before,” he says. “When I listened to it the first time, I thought that a 2010-remix needed more variety. My remix is what came out of that idea.”
You might not guess that Zaslavski has a side career playing in a metal band, called Dioramic. “So I’m definitely used to other genres besides electronic music,” he says. “But I actually prefer producing electro house music. I love songs that have lots of different layers and parts--music that I have to explore. Nevertheless I’m always open to any kind of music, as long as it’s interesting.”
“I want to thank Beatport, Strictly Rhythm and Armand Van Helden for giving producers the opportunity to remix the track,” says Zaslavski, who won a prize pack including a $250 Beatport gift card, Native Instruments’ Traktor Duo, and a grip of Strictly Rhythm merchandise. “Of course, also a big ‘Thank you’ to all of you who listened to my remix and spun it!”
