BusyP

If you’ve so much as glanced at a blog in the past five years, you surely know who Busy P [a] is. AKA Pedro Winter, the Parisian DJ and entrepreneur’s claims to fame are too numerous to count: former manager of Daft Punk, current mastermind behind the Ed Banger label, cultivator of dubious facial hair, hob-nobber with the likes of Karl Lagerfeld. To use Ron Burgundy’s famous phrase, he’s kind of a big deal.

But if you thought that Busy P was exclusively about electro bangers, think again. In his Weekend Weapons selection, Mr. Winter pulls out some surprising picks—Todd Edwards! Jeff Mills! Moodymann?!—and hints that dubstep may be giving electro a run for its money in 2010.

Chromeo, ‘Needy Girl (Zdar Dub)’ (Turbo)

My favorite Canadian band remixed by one of France’s electro godfathers. Shake it and enjoy that explosive cocktail.

Kenny Dope, ‘Jam the Mace’ (Dope Wax)

I have more of Kenny Dope’s records in my collection than by any other artist. When he tag-teamed with Louie Vega as Masters at Work, I was addicted to their beats. This one is a classic joint, I always have it in my case.

Boys Noize, ‘Jeffer (Modeselektor Remix)’ (Boysnoize)

Pure German material here. Banger master Boys Noize and those hooligans Modeselektor can’t go wrong. Really mental—I love it.

Todd Edwards, ‘Never Far from You (Sunshine Bros. Sunny Day Remix)’ (I Records)

Forget everything they said about garage and co. There is only one Todd Edwards, no one can compete. In my top five house producers.

Norma Jean Bell, ‘I’m the Baddest Bitch (In the Room)’ (NRK)

Kenny Dixon Jr. is also in my house top five. If James Brown was making house music…

Jeff Mills, ‘The Bells’ (Purpose Maker)

For those who love techno. Don’t be scared of repetitive music! Masterpiece.

Underground Resistance, ‘Hi Tech Jazz’ (UR)

Another one from Detroit. Classy. Not much to say, to be honest. If you don’t have any UR in your iTunes, wake up!

Dopplereffekt, ‘Plastiphilia 2’ (Clone)

As a big fan of Kraftwerk, I naturally got into Dopplereffekt. Dark, minimal, but so intense. I play this in all my DJ sets. Definitely an album to recommend.

High Rankin, ‘Meow Meow’ (Cheaper Thrills)

I play more and more dubstep lately. I love the heavy bass. Kids go crazy when I drop this. Miami WMC 2010 was all about dubstep, watch out!

HEY TODAY! ‘Talk to Me (Busy P Remix)’ (Turbo)

My latest remix. So proud to release something on Turbo. The original track is so good, I was scared to try a remix. So I decided to do something different, more electro than a massive club banger.
