A house DJ through and through, the German’s long and successful career in dance music hasn’t seen him drift far beyond the Chicago and New York built scene, much to his benefit - you always know an Ian Pooley cut will have tight production and chunky house grooves, regardless of the dancefloor’s flavour of the month.
From funky vocal house to jazzy deep house, jacking tech house, and electro, Pooley has become a master of diversified rhythms within the house spectrum.
Pooley’s most recent album ‘In Other Words’, released on Ministry Of Sound Germany in July, flowed effortlessly from jazz to soulful house, hip house, disco, and electronic jams, and showcased his ability to create different moods.
We asked Ian Pooley for eight of his current favourite DJ cuts.
This is a perfect opener. I’ve never heard of them before, but the three tracks on this EP are amazing. ‘How Can I Show You’ is on heavy rotation on my iPod and the Ooft! Remix of ‘Miss World’ is great too.
Actually it’s cool to start with the original and then mix into the Ooft! Remix, which I’ve tried before and it worked great!
I’d play this at the beginning of a set as well. It’s simply beautiful and reminds me of some classic Nick Holder stuff. Quality all around.
Matteo from APIDW wrote to me a few months ago and suggested we make a track together. It turned out quite well, if I do say so myself.
This is classic disco house with a fresh touch. It works perfect every time I play it.
I love everything Deetron is doing right now. Be sure to check the remix he did for Leon ‘I Follow You’.
I’ve produced quite a lot in the past year and it always feels a bit weird playing your own stuff, but I’m always surprised how well people recieve this track when I do.
The title of this track never fails to make me laugh. I love the groove of it and the flow is perfect. It sounds like it was made just for me.
This is a typically one of those tracks which, when you listen to it at home, think “Well it’s ok, it’s not bad, let’s try it and see what happens,” and then you play it for the first time and the crowd goes mental. Unbelievable!
I’d play this more towards the end of a set. It fits perfectly into an early morning vibe. This guy is my man of the moment, and I love everything he does. Check out his ‘Raw Cuts’ EP series too!
